Makueni County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism, Dr. Sonia Nzilani, passed away on Saturday, November 22nd, 2025.
Dr. Nzilani was found unresponsive on Saturday morning at her home in Makindu.
Her death was announced by the Makueni Governor, Mutula Kilonzo Junior, who eulogized her as a leader committed to public service, noting her passion for the growth of Makueni County.
The Governor also remembered Dr. Nzilani as an accomplished environmentalist who was even nicknamed "Syomiti" for her contribution to environmental conservation.
Before joining the county government, Dr. Nzilani served as a Lecturer and Head of the Department of Hydrology and Aquatic Sciences at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU).
Dr. Nzilani had a Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Life Sciences from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria.
She received her two Master's degrees in Water and Coastal Management and Environmental Assessment and Management from Cadiz University (Spain) and the University of Bologna (Italy), respectively.
The late CECM studied her undergraduate degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from Moi University in Kenya.
In her academic life, Dr. Nzilani published over 10 academic publications, which received 52 citations.
She had worked for 17 years, practicing local and international consultancy, capacity building, auditing, and training on Aquaculture, Fisheries, Climate Change, and Natural Resource Management.
She was also involved in the implementation of Training and Capacity building programs by the Netherlands Organization for International Co-operation in Higher Education (NUFFIC).
Dr. Sonia was the Founder and Chairperson of the Kibwezi Center for Sustainability, a registered NGO that promotes Education, Public Health, and Environmental Conservation.
