Former Chief Justice and 2027 presidential hopeful David Maraga has opened the door to a potential political partnership with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Obinna TV Extra on Monday, November 24, Maraga said he is open to working with Kalonzo due to their long-standing friendship and shared history as law classmates at the University of Nairobi.

“Mr Kalonzo is a good man. We attended the same university, so there is mutual respect. I am open to working with him, but only if he embraces my vision for the country.” Maraga noted.

Maraga emphasised that any partnership must begin with a shared commitment to his core values, including upholding the rule of law, battle against graft, and empowering the youth.

He stated that anyone interested in joining his campaign must fully align with these principles before any formal collaboration can take place.

“If he comes and embraces my vision, we will work together. As the presidential flag bearer, others must rally behind me.” Maraga explained, adding that he cannot cede ground to anyone.

On the possibility of working with former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, Maraga added that Matiangi would first need to meet the irreducible minimums before he agrees to work with him.

According to Maraga, Matiang’i must begin by embodying his vision for the country, which includes upholding the rule of law and rooting out graft. If Matiangi upholds such values, Maraga said, he can always sit down and work with him as they head into 2027.

In the same interview, the former chief justice ruled out any possibility of working with President William Ruto. He said their values are incompatible, insisting their paths would never align.

Maraga also revealed his decision to enter politics was inspired by the 2024 Gen Z–led protests against the Finance Bill, which he described as a wake-up call for leaders to address youth grievances. He also highlighted his focus on the younger generation as a key driver of his political ambition.

“The youth cried out for justice and opportunity. As an elder, I cannot sit idle while they suffer,” Maraga stated.
