Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has asked the  Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to resign after violent clashes in Narok on Monday.

In a strongly worded letter, Gachagua dared Kanja to resign, as he accused the police boss of failing to act on what he described as coordinated agression against members of the opposition.

"If you are not in full control of the Police Service, kindly do the honourable thing and resign," Gachagua said on Tuesday.

The former Deputy President specifically referenced the mayhem that was witnessed in Narok Town on Monday, where tens of police officers were deployed in the area, allegedly to quell Gachagua's campaigns in the area.

Gachagua alleged that the presence of police officers was by design and was the work of Murang'a Woman Representative Betty Maina.

"Mr Kanja, you are aware that the two police officers attached to the Murang'a woman representatives were deployed to Narok yesterday and they were seen publicly issuing instructions to police officers and coordinating the Narok incident," Gachagua claimed.

He went on, "Your calculated viral silence and inaction imply involvement, irresponsibility, recklessness or incompetence at play."

While accusing Kanja of ordering the roadblocks along all major highways leading to Narok Town on Monday, the former Deputy President further accused the police boss of surrendering the national police command to elected leaders affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance.

Besides a call for Knaja's resignation, Gachagua also demanded the immediate transfer of two unnamed officers from Narok, alleging that they were under direct orders from Betty Maina.

"We demand that you take action on the Narok Town incident with immediate effect. Without delay, we demand that the two police officers attached to the above politician be withdrawn from Narok and be stopped from issuing instructions to senior police officers," he added.

The Narok Town Ward race is set to be a political battle between the ruling United Democratic Alliance, whose candidate is Robert Kanyinge Ole Kudate and Gachagua's DCP party.

Besides Narok Town, UDA and the opposition are also battling for votes in other volatile regions, including Mbeere North, where the parliamentary race has been tipped to go to the wire.
