Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have nabbed a cryptocurrency fraudster who stole millions from a woman.
In a statement on Thursday, November 27, DCI confirmed that the man was arrested in the Kiamunyi area, Nakuru County, by detectives from Kilifi North.
The man had swindled Ksh3.9 million from a woman in Kilifi, which prompted the detectives to kickstart investigations and a manhunt against the man.
The suspect, who is expected to be arraigned at the Kilifi Law Courts, is set to face several charges related to money laundering, unauthorised registration of SIM cards, obtaining money by false pretence, and conspiracy to defraud, according to the DCI.
According to the detectives, investigations have established that the suspect has been involved in multiple other digital fraud activities across the country.
"The suspect (alias Abdirahaman Abdikarim, alias Jamie Damon) luck spectacularly ran out when investigators discovered he had swindled Kshs. 3.9 million from a Kilifi woman," DCI stated.
"This revelation immediately put him on the detectives' radar, with the seasoned gumshoes trailing the perpetrator, effectively halting his scamming streak," they added.
The announcement comes two weeks after the detectives arrested three Nigerians in Kirinyaga County, after detectives uncovered a suspected cyber fraud syndicate believed to have been operating from a rented apartment.
The suspects were arrested in Mwaliko Estate, Mwea Town, after a multi-agency raid on Wednesday, November 12.
The suspects were reportedly flushed out from their hideout after area locals raised an alarm over what was described as 'late-night' activities from the Nigerian nationals, which raised further suspicion.
Following the raid, detectives recovered 21 mobile phones, 79 SIM cards, a laptop, and ten credit cards, which the suspects were using for online scams.
"A well-coordinated multi-agency raid in Mwaliko Estate within Mwea town has blown the lid off a suspected cyber fraud ring,” the DCI said in a statement.
“Alert members of the public raised the alarm over suspicious movements and late-night activities inside a rented apartment, prompting swift action by detectives," it added.
