President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto Attacked in Kilifi over Unga Prices

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President (DP) William Ruto on Thursday received a hostile reception in Kilifi after residents disrupted their rally chanting Unga Unga slogans.

The Jubilee leaders led by the President were booed every time they uttered their 'Tuko Pamoja' slogan, with residents instead chanting 'unga' in response.

DP Ruto attempted to calm down the crowd but they continued to respond with 'Unga' each time a speaker on the podium shouted 'Jubilee'.

Kilifi North Member of Parliament (MP) Gideon Mung'aro who tried to quiet the crowd by stating that the government had responded to the crisis by making sure maize flour is sold at Sh90 was shouted down the podium as the crowd refused to hear any of it.

Despite the loud chants, President Kenyatta and his entire delegation ignored the crowd and did not address the Unga matter but instead attacked the Opposition and defended their performance track record.

"We want to unite Kenya by working not propaganda. For a very long time, we have been ruled through propaganda. People are coming to incite you instead of telling you how they will help you.

"We will not be able to give jobs to our youths if we will not unite the country. If we live without hating one another, investors will find a conducive environment to invest in our country,” the President stated.

Kenyatta further noted that his government had achieved a lot in the past four years, doubling the development realized by all the previous regimes.

“Those who claim we have done nothing for the past four years where were they all that time yet they were in government. Where were they when Kenyans needed roads? We have equipped hospitals with modern equipment and waived examination fees,” he stated.

Meanwhile, a spot-check by a local daily in Kilifi supermarkets noted that residents were only allowed to purchase three packets of flour and it was available for less than an hour before they were all bought out.
