Ministry of Education Announces That All KCPE Candidates Will Join Secondary School

Education Principal Secretary (PS) Belio Kipsang on Saturday announced that all the pupils who will sit for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education(KCPE) will join secondary school.

Mr Kipsang while addressing students and teachers at St. Francis Girls High School, Mang’u, Kiambu County, during the school’s 53rd anniversary, noted that the government through the Ministry of Education was planning to spend Ksh 6 Billion to expand facilities in existing schools so that they can admit more students.

According to the PS, the new plan will see the ministry put up over 2,000 additional classrooms in 2,576 secondary schools across the country.

The Principal Secretary noted that the 100% transition from primary to secondary school was essential as it would open doors for more children to access formal secondary education.

Previously, many students were locked out of secondary schools on basis of their performance.

In 2016, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i announced that over 166,000 candidates would not join secondary schools as they had not met the required entry points.

In the past program, such students were admitted to vocational training institutes, youth polytechnics where they were taught manual skills that include, welding, carpentry and mechanical skills.

The announcement is part of the new reforms at the Ministry of Education.
