Mumias Sugar Company Manager Leonard Joseph Lubya Shot Dead, Wife Injured

The crisis facing Mumias Sugar Company on Sunday evening took a new twist after a senior manager at the company was shot dead by unknown gunmen.

According to Western Region Police Chief Moses Ombati, the manager, Leonard Joseph Lubya, was shot dead by three gunmen who had raided his home at around 10.30pm.

Ombati stated that Lubya was shot once in the head at his Matungulu home, Western region, and his wife sustained minor injuries during the attack.

He added that the three gunmen stole household ‎goods and a Toyota Harrier vehicle belonging to the deceased.

Detectives from Mumias DCI are reportedly at the scene and the motive of the attack is yet to be established.

The shooting of the manager came amidst a cloud of uncertainty over the company's future after it was shut down indefinitely.

The company shut down its operations on April 11, 2017, barely a month after the cash-strapped miller received Sh239 Million from the government, as part of a bailout strategy.

Mumias Sugar Company is a publicly-traded company owned 20 percent by the State.
