2 Police Officers Shot Dead by Colleagues in Elgeyo Marakwet

Two police officers were on Tuesday night shot dead by their colleagues in Elgeyo Marakwet in a case of mistaken identity.

The officers attached to the National Police Reserve Unit are said to have left their camp and went out patrolling without informing their commanders.

They were later confronted and shot by other Reservists who mistook them for bandits who have been launching attacks on civilians in the region.

One of the deceased was shot and wounded in the chest but died on arrival at the hospital while the other sustained stomach wounds and died on the spot.

The incident was confirmed by area police boss Lemmy Njiru who expressed regret in the unfortunate shooting of the 25 and 30-year olds.

The police reservists have been conducting security operations in the region which has in the recent past experienced deadly attacks.

On Tuesday night, 9 people killed and four others injured after heavily-armed bandits raided villages in the neighbouring Baringo County.

The raiders barricaded the roads before launching the attack in which they also torched several houses and shops.

The assaults happened even as security agents continue to flush out and disarm assailants in an operation ordered by Deputy President William Ruto.
