President Uhuru Kenyatta Declares Major Security Operation in Lamu County

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed police officers to kill and bury Al-Shabaab militants.

Speaking on Monday in Kizingitini, Lamu County where he was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto, President Kenyatta also declared a major security operation in the County.

"When we get them, we will not jail but bury them," the President stated.

He added, "Let me assure residents of Mpeketoni and Lamu that the government is prepared to face the terrorists."

"Mine is to urge you to vacate the areas intended for operation so that our security forces can get enough space to deal with and finish the criminals."

The President’s announcement comes days after Public Works Principal Secretary (PS) Mariam El Maawy was shot and injured by Al Shabaab militants.

The Head of State implied that Ms El Maawy could have been targeted for issuing title deeds to locals.

He asked residents to help in the fight against Al-Shabaab by giving information that could help track them.

The PS and five people were ambushed by gunmen at Milihoi area along the Mpeketoni-Lamu Road on Thursday last week.

Ms El Maawy was shot in the shoulder and leg while the five other people including her bodyguard and nephew were killed during the attack.
