ODM Divided After Officials Support Moses Wetangula's Senate Bid

Tension is looming in the Bungoma Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) branch after county officials split over who to support for the Senate seat.

A section of the leaders announced that they would back incumbent Moses Wetangula despite vying on a different party, Ford Kenya.

This has seemingly angered and caused a division in the party since other members are supporting ODM candidate Bonny Nyongesa.

The officials including County organising secretary Eric Wambasi and his Webuye East counterpart Richard Namisi declared they would heed to ODM leader Raila Odinga's call for them to back Wetangula.

Speaking to journalists, they maintained that Wetangula deserved to be reelected for his excellent performance during his first tenure.

“We agree with Raila on his call that Nyongesa steps down for Wetangula who shelved his presidential ambitions," they stated.

The announcement was however dismissed by Bungoma ODM chairman Ali Balala who claimed that the officials were no longer members of the Orange Party since they had quit and were now supporting Ford Kenya.

Balala insisted that Nyongesa would not step down for Wetangula despite the two being in the National Super Alliance (NASA).

"Nyongesa will be on the ballot on August 8. If they (Ford-K) believe their candidate is strong, why ask for backing? The two are not ODM officials. They cannot purport to speak on behalf of the party. Only the chairman is authorised to do so,” affirmed Balala.

There has been disagreements in the Western region as aspirants of ODM, Ford Kenya and Amani National Congress (ANC) who are all in NASA battle it out for the same positions.
