Executive Functions at City Hall Suspended Until Mike Sonko is Sworn In

Executive operations at the Nairobi County Council offices have been brought to a standstill awaiting the swearing in of Governor-elect Mike Sonko scheduled for Monday.

Effecting of contracts, leases, assignments, processing of payments and all other functions that require the approval of the county executive committee have all been stopped.

"At this moment the county is expecting a new executive owing to the election of Mike Mbuvi Sonko as the new Nairobi governor, and until this new group has been sworn in, all their functions have been suspended," an internal memo sent to all county Chief Officers and Directors read.

The memo went on to state that the move will curb the occurrence of any underhand deals members of the previous regime may want to execute before exiting office.

Mr Sonko had written a protest letter to the outgoing Governor Evans Kidero on Tuesday, issuing him with four demands as he (Kidero) plans to leave.

One of the demands on Sonko's letter asked Dr Kidero to discontinue any withdrawals from the county government bank accounts.

The Governor-elect also ordered Kidero not to remove any items from the Governor's office at City Hall or any other office materials belonging to the county.
