President Uhuru Kenyatta Convenes Parliament and Senate for First Sitting

President Uhuru Kenyatta has convened the two Houses of Parliament (National Assembly and The Senate) for their first sitting after the General Election.

In a special legal Gazette dated 23rd August 2017, President Kenyatta set the first sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday, August 31st, 2017 from 2:30 pm at the main Parliament buildings.

"Notice is given that pursuant to Article 126 (2) of the Constitution, I, Uhuru Kenyatta President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-In-Chief of Defence Force, gives notice that the first sitting of the Twelfth Parliament- The National Assembly shall be held in the National Assembly Chamber, Nairobi on Thursday, 31st August at 2:30 pm," the notice read in part.

The President also issued a similar directive for the Senate to convene for their first sitting on Thursday, 31st August at 2:30 pm.

"Notice is given that pursuant to Article 126 (2) of the Constitution, I, Uhuru Kenyatta President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-In-Chief of Defence Force, gives notice that the first sitting of the Twelfth Parliament- The Senate shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Nairobi on Thursday, 31st August at 2:30 pm," the notice read.

Following the announcement, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi welcomed all Members of Parliament to next week's sitting.

"Welcome to the first sitting of the 12th Parliament of Kenya next week, Thursday 31st of August, 2017," he stated.

Reports indicate that swearing in of legislators and election of Speakers for both houses will form the key agenda for the first sitting.

This comes even as the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) moved to court to stop the reconvening of Parliament over failure to meet the two-thirds gender rule.

Through lawyer Eunice Lumallas, FIDA wants the IEBC stopped from presenting a list of elected members of both the National Assembly and Senate for swearing in unless they meet the two-thirds gender threshold.
