President Uhuru Kenyatta Endorses Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya for Council of Governors Seat

President Uhuru Kenyatta has endorsed Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya as the next Chairman of the Council of Governors (COG).

President Kenyatta appealed to other Jubilee Governors to back Governor Mvurya for the seat.

Mvurya previously served as Deputy Chairman of the COG for a period of two terms.

“I am asking that this time we start on the right foot. Let us not be people who engage in confrontation,” President Kenyatta stated.

“Do not make the Council of Governor a venue for competition; make it truly a venue for developing issues for consultation,” he added.

Deputy President William Ruto echoed the President's sentiments noting that 62 per cent of governors who were elected are in Jubilee, which also controls 54 per cent of Senate and 61 per cent of the National Assembly.

“We have increased our numbers because the people trust Jubilee with devolution. That was a clear mandate,” the DP stated.

If elected, Mvurya will become the fourth governor to hold the seat that brings together all the 47 counties.

Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok has been the COG Chairman after taking over from former Meru Governor Peter Munya in May.

Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo replaced former Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani as the council's Chief Whip.

The first COG Chairman was former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto who held the position from 2013 to 2015.

Former Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu has retained his seat as Vice-Chairman of the council.
