IEBC Commissioners Meet to Discuss Date for Fresh 2017 Presidential Election

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners are currently locked up in a closed-door meeting to discuss the official date for the repeat presidential election.

Following the nullification of the 2017 presidential election results, the commission was instructed to organize a repeat election by the Supreme Court.

The meeting comes amid pressure from both Jubilee and National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders to announce the date for the fresh election.

"We are telling IEBC not to waste our time. It should announce the date of the fresh election because Kenyans are ready," Deputy President William Ruto charged on Sunday.

The Opposition leaders have also agitated for the current Commission to be disbanded before a repeat election is carried out.

"CEO Ezra Chiloba cannot manage our election again. We will not have an election managed by thieves because that will be like giving our goats to hyenas. They will eat them whole, and we cannot have that," NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga cautioned.

"We have not said we want Chebukati out. But we have told him not to go to this fresh election without cleaning his house. Sweep them out! I do not hate Mr Chiloba, but he must go home. He did not give Kenyans justice," NASA leader Kalonzo Musyoka warned.

The electoral commission on Sunday had dismissed claims of there having been a public spat between some of its commissioners as well as reports that indicated there had been a crisis meeting.
