PNU Disowns Peter Munya's Endorsement of NASA

Party of National Unity (PNU) Chairman John Kamama has disowned the endorsement of National Super Alliance (NASA) Flagbearer Raila Odinga by former Meru Governor Peter Munya, who claims to be the PNU Party Leader.

In a statement, Kamama stated that PNU, which is led by former President Mwai Kibaki, was firmly backing the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta. He added that the people Munya paraded yesterday during a news conference held with NASA Principals were not members of PNU.

Kamama further stated that PNU Secretary General John Okemwa Anunda, who accompanied Munya to the NASA conference, had been stripped of his authority to sign any document for the party by the National Executive Council.

He cited a judgment passed by the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal in June declaring that Munya’s team was not part of the party’s National Executive Committee members.

The tribunal also ruled that Munya’s team, which took office in October 2016, should hand over office to the previous officials until a proper delegates’ meeting is held.

Kamama noted that the tribunal found Munya had acted irregularly in convening more than 3,000 delegates at the Bomas of Kenya, where he declared that he was unanimously elected party leader.

The PNU Chairman provided a Kenya Gazette Notice whereby the Registrar of Political Parties named former President Mwai Kibaki as the Party Leader, Kamama as the Chairman, Irene Muronji and Paul Amayo as the first and second Vice Chairpersons.

Munya defected from the Party of National Unity (PNU) and joined the National Super Alliance (NASA) on Tuesday.

The former Governor conveyed that he was the unfortunate casualty of the compromised election whose presidential election results were nullified by the Supreme Court.

He noted that he would be challenging the Meru gubernatorial election results in court after he lost to Governor Kiraitu Murungi in the August 8 General Election.
