Four Students to be Charged Over Moi Girls School Nairobi Fire Incident

Four students suspected to be behind the Moi Girls School Nairobi dormitory fire that killed nine students will be arraigned in Court on Wednesday.

According to police sources, prior investigations have zeroed in on the four students for the prosecution.

Education and Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i had termed the cause of the fire an arson attack.

The Police indicated that during the investigation, several suspects had been taken to the scene of the fire as they were gathering information.

"We started by grilling more than 15 of them, then nine then five and now we have four," the source stated.

"All I can say is, we have made a lot of progress, and these girls will be arraigned in before the end of the week."

Nonetheless, the majority of the students have blamed the fire incident on one of the students, noting that she was making her third suicide attempt that night.

According to students who were interviewed by the Nation, a Form 1 girl who had expressed her dislike for the school had sworn to do "something that would make her parents know that the school was not safe."

“That girl always said she is from a wealthy family and was feared in school because she is related to some people in the top administration," one of the students noted.

“She even had an iPod, and when the other students reported the matter to the prefects, nothing was done about it.”

“She had tried to commit suicide twice. The first time was by drinking a detergent and the second by suffocating herself with a pillow,” one student stated.

All students who were interviewed stated that the fire started from that particular girl's bed.

"When we heard other screams, we went and tried to put out the fire but it was spreading fast, and we ran outside. As we screamed, the other girls from the upper floor also rushed out,” a student said.

Nonetheless, the Police did not reveal any information on the investigations.
