Jubilee Governor Candidate Barred from Filing Petition

Nyamira Jubilee gubernatorial candidate, Walter Nyambati, has been barred from filing his election petition contesting Governor John Nyagarama's win in the August 8 election.

Mr Nyambati is the unfortunate casualty of a crisis at the courts following the absentia of judges and magistrates responsible for receiving the suits.

The Jubilee candidate, who had reported to the courts on Tuesday, was turned away with the explanation that Resident Judge Crispine Nagira who was to receive the suit is on vacation.

Another candidate for Ekerenyo Ward, Mr Francis Amenya Ndubi, who is challenging the victory of Thadeus Nyabaro was also turned away on the same day.

Mr Ndubi was told that Nyamira Principal Magistrate Eunice Nyutu, who was to handle petitions for the seats of County Assembly Representatives was also not available.

Court Registrar Patrick Arati said the petitioners will return on August 12 when a new magistrate will have assumed office.

The courts have seen an influx of the election petitions since the Supreme Court ruled that the August 8 election managed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was marred with irregularities and illegalities.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua are among those who have now been taken to court.
