IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati Ordered to Cancel October 17 Election Date

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has been ordered to cancel the October 17 presidential election date.

In a petition by Kura Yangu Sauti Yangu group, Chebukati has been told to withdraw his directive setting the date for the fresh election on October 17.

The movement, which comprises of several civil society organizations, wants Chebukati to engage in broad consultations with stakeholders to identify an appropriate date for the polls.

They expressed the public’s displeasure and lack of confidence in the Secretariat of the IEBC to undertake the fresh election, following the majority decision of the Supreme Court in the presidential petition.

As per the petition, the group also wants the Chairman to suspend and refer for criminal investigations all officers within the IEBC Secretariat who were responsible for the functioning of the KIEMS kits and the transmission of results.

They also ordered him to broadly consult stakeholders in the development of the operational plan for the fresh Presidential Election and deployment of personnel responsible for conducting the process.

The group has demanded that Chebukati submits the KIEMS kits and all other aspects of the IEBC’s information, communication technology infrastructure to an independent and comprehensive audit before the fresh elections are held.

The Commission's Chairman has further been asked to undertake a fresh, transparent and accountable tendering process for the ballot papers and result forms to be used in the polls.

On Wednesday, the same group wrote to the Director of Public Prosecutions asking him to investigate the IEBC officials who reportedly bungled the August elections.
