DWU Leaders Suspended After Refusing to Support DP William Ruto

A section of leaders at the Dock Workers Union (DWU) have been suspended after allegedly refusing to support the Jubilee Party.

The DWU Secretary General Simon Sang suspended the Union's Chairman, Mr Mohamed Sheria and two others after they chose to side with National Super Alliance (NASA) affiliate groups.

Mr Sheria is accused of having joined forces with KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion in signing a memorandum of understanding with the NASA coalition on August 4.

"That MoU has nothing to do with DWU. It is between Sheria as a person and NASA.

"We made our resolve to support Jubilee Party in November 2016 when we hosted Deputy President William Samoei Ruto and the resolution was made out of our love for our members," Mr Sang told journalists, alluding to the fact that the suspended officials had defied the organization's position.

Mr Sheria has, however, asked the Secretary-General to resign from his position before September 30 in what has become a fierce exchange of words.

The Chairman has threatened to lead a motion to oust Mr Sang during an annual general meeting that will be held on the said date.

The DWU comprises of 5,000 workers from the Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Ferry Services.

According to Mr Sang, he agreed to work with the ruling party to enable them to address contentious issues including the planned privatisation of the port of Mombasa, which could reduce the workforce by 3,300.
