Embakasi East MP Babu Owino Arrested

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has been arrested for allegedly insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Owino was tracked in Kilimani area before being taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road for questioning.

Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome confirmed the arrest of the MP.

Babu's colleagues stated that the MP informed them of the arrest through a WhatsApp message.

This comes after the newly-elected parliamentarian on Sunday uttered words deemed demeaning to the President.

Addressing an Opposition rally in Kangemi, Babu said: "If Muammar Gaddafi was removed by citizens, if Laurent Gbagbo was removed by citizens, if Yahya Jammmeh was removed by citizens, who are you? Wewe ni mtoto wa mbwa (You are the son of a dog)." The remarks are believed to have been directed at President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Officers at the DCI headquarters were ordered to study the clip that captured the said utterances for possible action.

Jubilee Party leaders including Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni wa Muchomba and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungw'a had warned they would take action if Babu Owino was not arrested by end of today.

Prior to the arrest, Babu had taken to social media where he stated he will not apologize to anyone for the remarks he made.

"I will not apologize to anyone because I called nobody’s name during my yesterday’s address.

"We have so many presidents in Kenya, from the President of SONU (Students Organization of Nairobi University) to all presidents of students union in Kenya, President of the Supreme Court, President of Youth senate and many more," he wrote on his Facebook page.

On calls for his arrest, the former SONU Chairman responded by saying "if the police want to arrest me let them do it now. The cell is meant for human beings, not animals."
