Johnstone Muthama Explains Why He Won't Campaign for Raila

Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has led a section of National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders in announcing that they will no longer campaign for their presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

Mr Muthama has argued that there was no need of campaigning for an election which the Opposition would not participate in.

Flanked by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi and Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi, the leaders maintain that the Opposition would not campaign until its demands to the IEBC are met.

"There is no point in participating in a poll whose outcome is predetermined," Muthama stated.

"We will continue pushing for changes. We want the election to be free, fair, transparent, credible and verifiable. If our demands are not met, we will not participate," Governor Oparanya added.

The leaders claimed that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto have concentrated on campaigns because they know they do not have the numbers.

"The many trips Uhuru and Ruto have been making around the country shows they did not win in August," MP Atandi claimed.

They further dismissed recent defections by key NASA allies as rejects who had moved to Jubilee for handouts and to try to remain relevant.

"Jubilee’s current efforts are too little too late. In a free, fair and credible election, Jubilee stands no chance.

"Money has never been the key driver for positive change. We remain focused on our objective to reclaim the country from the shackles of reactionary forces," MP Wandayi asserted.

In response to the NASA leaders, National Assembly Leader of the Majority Aden Duale dared the Opposition to boycott the repeat poll to their own detriment.

"The only way to measure the strength of a political party is through an election. They are saying the same things they said before the August 8 elections and now they don’t have a single MP in Kisii. I dare them to participate in the coming elections," Duale stated.
