6 Witnesses to Testify Against Presidential Aspirant

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has prepared six witnesses to testify against presidential aspirant Peter Solomon Gichira.

The six will provide their testimonies in a case where Mr Gichira is accused of having attempted suicide at the IEBC offices.

Gichira was on Monday arraigned in court, where he was accused of attempting to kill himself by jumping from the 6th floor at the Anniversary Towers building.

At the time of the incident, witnesses told reporters that Mr Gichira attempted to take his life after the electoral officials declined to clear him run as an independent candidate for the presidential seat.

He then immediately demanded an audience with IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati but was directed to the Secretariat offices.

He reportedly became violent and proceeded to try to unfasten a window and jump off while fleeing from security guards.

Speaking after the incident, the aspirant expressed his frustrations in failing to be cleared for the presidential contest.

"They would send me confirmation messages that I am running for MCA. It is like nobody took me vying for presidency seriously," Gichira said during an interview with the Standard.

He suspected foul play from the Registrar of Political Parties, who he accused of having sabotaged his bid to vie by rejecting his symbol.

The Independent candidate was granted reprieve by the High Court when Justice George Odunga ordered the IEBC to accept his papers and promptly give feedback on his candidature.
