President Uhuru Kenyatta Fulfills Ezra Chiloba's Sh12 Billion Request

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday signed into law the Supplementary budget that allocates Sh12 Billion for October 26 fresh presidential poll as requested by the IEBC.

The Commission, through CEO Ezra Chiloba, had requested for Sh12.2 Billion to conduct the repeat Presidential election but the Cabinet slashed the amount to Sh10 Billion.

Last week, an ad hoc Parliamentary Budget Committee, however, approved an additional Sh2 Billion to cater for ICT infrastructure to be used during the repeat poll.

"The committee recommends an increase of Sh2 billion recurrent expenditure for management of electoral process programme.

"This increment is for the Kenya Integrated Elections Management Systems (KIEMS)," the committee's report read in part.

Following the addition of the Sh2 Billion, IEBC will now receive an estimated Sh12 Billion for the repeat poll.

Meanwhile, the President also approved Sh25 Billion for free secondary education that kicks off in January next year.

The Supplementary Appropriation (No. 3) Act, 2017, also allocated  Sh6.7 Billion for maize subsidy.

Other provisions of the Act includes Sh6.7 Billion set aside for the Inua Jamii cash transfer programme that caters for senior citizens aged 70 years and above and Sh4 Billion for security operations as well as Sh3.9 Billion for drought mitigation.
