Kenya's Trending Topics on 17th October 2017

Kenyans were on Tuesday engaged in a heated debates regarding some of the hottest topics of the day including;

Huddah

Kenyan socialite Huddah Monroe caused a stir on social media on Tuesday after updating a post on the alleged killing of NASA supporters during the anti-IEBC protests.

The post that contained a suggestive typo read: "Personally, I think nobody should moarn [sic] the death of anyone who dies at demonstrations - the families should not even bury them, they should let their bodies get eaten by dogs. Msiba wa kujitakia hauambiwi pole (there's no sympathy for self-inflicted injury)."

The harsh post attracted an equally harsh backlash from social media users.

Some did not hesitate to call out the prominent personality on the obviously misspelt word on her post.

Others took the opportunity to attempt to convince the "bad girl gone good" that she was wrong.

Others, unaware of why Huddah was trending, linked her to other trending stories of the day.

Mogadishu/ Somalia

The two topics topped the trends on Tuesday following a blast that occurred in Mogadishu involving a truck packed with several hundred kilograms of military-grade and homemade explosives.

Various social media users from Kenya and around the world shared comments on the ordeal as well as survivor tales.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Amb. Amina Mohamed announced that 31 victims would be evacuated from the Horn of Africa nation into Kenya. She also conveyed plans to ferry 31 tonnes of medical supplies to the Somalia.

#NASADemosWeek4

Despite a Tuesday morning announcement indicating that NASA had cancelled anti-IEBC protests, pockets of clashes and running battles were encountered through the day.

In Kisii, protesters took to the streets demonstrating against an alleged targeted hit, where police are accused of having fired bullets toward Senator Janet Ongera's car.

The hashtag also trended as NASA leaders announced changes to their protests calendar.

Laare

The Meru County town in Igembe North constituency was on the trend after NASA supporters clashed with their Jubilee counterparts ahead of a planned Opposition rally.

The clashes turned violent leading to the destruction of a podium that had been erected for NASA leader Raila Odinga to issue his address.

Jimmy Wanjigi/ Muthaiga

Nairobi business tycoon Jimmy Wanjigi on Tuesday caused heated discussions on social media platforms after police raided his palatial Muthaiga home.

Under the two subjects, Kenyans shared their varied reactions to the drastic turn of events.

During a raid in a Malindi house linked to Wanjigi on Monday, the police recovered five AK-47 rifles and 93 rounds of ammunition.

It is believed that the police then sought a warrant to search the NASA financier's Nairobi residence, his office and restaurant.

Amid heavy police presence, the 44 Muthaiga Drive home was invaded by Flying Squad police and those from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit.

The billionaire businessman later moved to court to block the police from arresting him where he posted an anticipatory bail charge as a sign of good faith with the court.

Social media users went on to use the hashtag #WanjigiLifeInDanger to convey discontent with the government's actions.
