NASA's Appointments in Parliament Cause Sharp Division

A section of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Coast has protested the new appointments in Parliament by the National Super Alliance (NASA).

The MPs claim to have been discriminated against when NASA leaders chose to have both the Minority Chief Whip and Minority Leader selected from one region of the country.

Led by Suleiman Dori (Msambweni), the leaders altogether rejected the list handed to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi adding that it did not reflect a gender balance.

"We would like to have the list withdrawn from Parliament because it was not agreed upon in the parliamentary group committee," the MP stated.

The Coast region legislators in September rejected a preliminary list of similar appointments threatening to ditch the Opposition coalition if their demands were not met.

The list submitted on Wednesday had Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula as the Minority Leader in Senate while MP John Mbadi has been appointed to lead the minority in the National Assembly.

Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka had earlier rejected a list submitted by the Opposition on grounds that they had not followed the proper procedures.

In response, the NASA co-principal stated: "That was a scheme that was hatched a long time ago and I blame Mr Lusaka for the mess."

The new development in NASA comes soon after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other leaders asked the lawmakers not to participate in parliament activities.

Kenyans.co.ke has established that a number of Coast MPs were not aware of the Wednesday meeting in which the deliberations occurred.

"I was not aware of the meeting, I am currently on my way there. However, I can confirm that the meeting has taken place and our position will be communicated shortly," Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke.
