Why Musalia Mudavadi's ANC Party Wants to Quit NASA

The Amani National Congress (ANC) Party under the leadership of Musalia Mudavadi on Wednesday threatened to ditch the National Super Alliance (NASA) over new appointments in parliament.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, ANC Deputy Party Leader Ayub Savula announced that the party was reconsidering its position in NASA.

According to Mr Savula, the Orange Democratic Movement was bullying and sidelining the other coalition parties in the nominations.

He noted that ODM had proceeded to nominate members for other positions despite the fact that the parties had only agreed on the nominations of minority leaders in the Senate and National Assembly.

“We regret the list and we are forced to ask Musalia Mudavadi out of NASA we focus on 2022,” Savula stated.

The alliance on Wednesday submitted its nominees for Parliamentary appointments where Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula was selected as the Minority Leader in Senate while MP John Mbadi was appointed to lead the minority in the National Assembly.

The coalition also appointed nominees for Chief Whip position and other key parliamentary leadership posts.

The nominations, however, did not appeal to a section of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Coast who claimed to have been discriminated against as both the Minority Chief Whip and Minority Leader were from one region.

Led by Suleiman Dori (Msambweni), the leaders rejected the list handed to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi adding that it did not reflect a gender balance.

"We would like to have the list withdrawn from Parliament because it was not agreed upon in the parliamentary group committee," the MP stated.

The Coast region legislators in September rejected a preliminary list of similar appointments threatening to ditch the Opposition coalition if their demands were not met.
