Martin Kamotho, alias Githeri man, is among the individuals President Uhuru Kenyatta will award with the coveted Head of State Commendation as Kenya marks 54 years since it gained Independence.
The President is to issue the State commendations - Orders, decorations and medals - in recognition of outstanding or distinguished services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities.
The Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H) is the highest honour in Kenya followed by the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (E.G.H.), then the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (M.G.H.).
They are followed by the Uhodari Medal, Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (C.B.S.), Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (E.B.S.), Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.), the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya, the Distinguished Conduct Order, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star of Kenya, Head of State’s Commendation.
Also on the list of those to be honoured with the HSC (Civilian Division) is controversial blogger Robert Alai, musicians Ben Githae and Rufftone, Citizen TV senior reporter Jackie Maribe, State House Director of Digital Communications Dennis Itumbi.
Others include Deputy Director in charge of State branding and events Thomas “Big Ted” Kwaka, State House Senior Director of Public Communications Munyori Buku and Hellen Nkaiserry, the wife of the late Cabinet Minister Joseph Nkaissery.
Over 150 people are believed to have made an indelible mark in the country and are honoured annually with the different awards.
The President also issues awards in the Military Division and Civilian Division.
Populary known as 'githeri man', Mr Kamotho came to the limelight during the August 8 General Election when a picture of him emerged queueing while holding a paper bag with 'githeri' in it.
He later received various incentives from corporates including Safaricom who awarded him together with his wife and daughter a Sumsang S8.
He has since been a face known to many as his simple act gave Kenyans a reason to smile amid the heightened political times.
