Kenyans were on Wednesday a frustrated lot after saddening news that the death toll from road accidents over the past 72 hours had clocked the 70 mark.

Under the topics Sachangwan and the hashtag #BarabaraSafe, netizens shared their angry sentiments pointing an accusing finger at President Uhuru Kenyatta, the government and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Many of those who shared felt that the concerned authorities were not doing enough to prevent the accidents from happening. They then moved on to offer solutions based on their assessment of the crisis.

The uproar was sparked after a tragic accident at the Sachangwan blackspot along the Nakuru-Eldoret road on Tuesday.

The accident involved around 13 vehicles and was reportedly caused by a lorry that veered out of control after failing to negoriate a cormer.

"A majority of the accidents are caused by reckless driving which makes it difficult to stop the accidents before they happen," NTSA Director General Francis Meja explained.

One of the survivors, Mr Mohamed Hussein recounted the fatal accident on Wednesday stating: "I was travelling with my family from Nairobi to Kitale when I saw a truck speeding on the opposite side, from the hill. I stopped the vehicle since I was driving, but the truck came crashing into other vehicles until it reached where we had stopped.

"We were lucky that we escaped with minor injuries. Out of the four of us who were in the vehicle, only one got serious injuries," he told Nation.

Githeri Man

Martin Kimotho alias "Githeri Man" was a trending topic on Wednesday as Kenyans shared their dissent over President Kenyatta awarding the social media celebrity a Head of State Commendation (HSC) on Jamhuri Day.

Those who opposed the list that was gazetted on December 11 were convinced that the President and his committee should have awarded "more deserving" Kenyans.

Kasarani/ #JamhuriDay

The two topics continued to dominate Twitter trends a day after Kenyans commemorated the 54th year since independence.

President Kenyatta presided over the national Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Moi International Stadium, Kasarani. However, the stadium was barely filled as expansive rows of seats remained empty for the entire event.

Netizens found the occurrence peculiar and continued to share what they thought could explain the low turn-out.
