Uhuru Replaces Kibaki as Masinde Muliro University Chancellor

President Uhuru Kenyatta has replaced his predecessor Mwai Kibaki as the chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

The Head of State has appointed Peter Muthoka as the new chancellor for the University.

Muthoka, a career corporate manager, is set to serve for a period of five years with effect from December 8.

The appointment was made in a gazette notice dated December 14.

Mr Muthoka on Friday presided over his 1st graduation ceremony at the University.

Addressing the graduands, he conveyed a message from the former President stating that Kibaki enjoyed working with the institution and enjoyed their commitment to bring about peace and harmony.

Kibaki, through Mr Muthoka, applauded the University fraternity for assisting in the wealth creation and employment in the country.

Muthoka has a long-standing experience in corporate management and entrepreneurship in both the private and public sector over several years.

He has been an initiator and implementer of development programmes at national, regional and international levels under the Government of Kenya and multilateral and bilateral agencies.

He retired from the Kenya Commercial Bank in May 2012 after eight years of service as the group Chair.

Mr Muthoka was the chair of Old Mutual Asset Managers, Old Mutual Investments Services, Bel Air Management Ltd, the Advocates Plaza Ltd and Faulu Microfinance Bank.

The Billionaire is also a Director of Old Mutual Holdings and Old Mutual Life Assurance Company, Old Mutual Africa Holdings and Old Mutual Emerging Markets and Director of the Institute of Directors.

Mr Muthoka was one of the Ukambani businessmen and professionals who were part of Kenyatta's re-election campaign in Eastern region.

He is also believed to have funded the UhuRuto re-election campaign.
