5 Police Officers Killed in Night Attack

Five police officers were killed on Tuesday in an attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

The attack took place on the Elwak-Kotulo road in Mandera and reports indicate the attackers also burnt a police lorry.

According to the Daily Nation, Mandera South deputy county commissioner Daniel Bundotich confirmed the incident, stating that three police reservists and two Administration Police officers died in the attack.

“We lost five security officers in the attack while on patrol on Elwak-Kotulo road.

“Combined forces were on patrol before being ambushed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants at Dubacity.

"A team responding to the attack was also attacked and their lorry burnt,’’ stated Mr Bundotich.

This comes just a few days after Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers on Sunday evening killed 5 suspected Al-Shabaab militants near the Kenya-Somali border.

According to KDF spokesman Colonel David Obonyo, the slain militants are believed to be behind the Ijara police station attack.

Mr Obonyo stated that the officers caught up with the terrorists as they tried to get to the Somalia border.

He further revealed that during the exchange of fire, a stolen land cruiser belonging to the Ijara police was destroyed after explosives being ferried went off.

A motorcycle, 5 AK47 rifles, 13 magazines with 370 rounds of ammunition and 2 grenades were recovered.
