New Twist Emerges in Killing of Former MP Kabando wa Kabando's Mother

Former MP Kabando wa Kabando's mother was killed in July 2014 and the Nyeri High Court on Wednesday learnt that she had tried to escape from her assailant before she was beheaded.

Patrick Kyalo, the investigating officer in the case, stated that it was clear that Rose Wachera, 70, may have attempted to run away before she was overpowered.

The officer revealed that Wachera's body was lying in a pool of blood approximately 30 metres from the main house.

Kyalo was testifying before Justice Jairus Ngaah, in the case where Kabando's brother Caesar Thiari is accused of killing his mother.

“It’s likely the accused beheaded his mother with a machete after chasing her in the compound,” the officer explained.

Ms Wachera was hacked to death at around 2 pm at Kaini Village in Mukurweini in 2014 during a bizarre incident.

A relative, Ms Agnes Njeri Macharia, stated that she was returning home from church with friends when they heard screams from the compound.

“I shouted at my cousin (Thiari) who was in the compound but he did not respond. The gate was locked from inside and we started screaming,” Ms Macharia recalled.

The high perimeter wall, she added, prevented them from forcing their way into the compound.

Ms Macharia revealed that her cousin emerged from the gate brandishing a panga and chased them away.

“We had to run for our lives and seek refuge in a neighbour’s home as he was armed with a panga,” she stated.

Macharia then revealed that they heard the suspect shouting: “Mambo imekwisha. Mambo imekwisha! (It is over. It is over)" and once he ran away, they rushed into the compound only to find her aunt’s body.

The court will on March 8, 2018, rule on whether Thiari has a case to answer.
