Former Nigerian President's Controversial Visit to Kenya

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo jetted in the country this week, a surprise visit that went unnoticed by many Kenyans.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an official within the Nigerian Embassy noted that the former President arrived in the country for a private visit.

"The former Nigerian President was here, he came and left immediately and was here on a private visit," the official stated.

This is contrary to the reports that Mr Obesenju had visited Kenya to broker a deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga.

The Nigerian embassy further refuted reports that the former President, who is a close ally to Mr Odinga, had come to convince the latter to drop the swearing-in plan.

According to a report by the Star, he met Odinga and other NASA principals and attempted to persuade them to drop the plan set for January 30.

"He was on a private visit, and that had nothing with Mr Odinga's swearing-in plan," the official asserted.

Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary (PS) Monica Juma, on her part, stated that she was not aware of the former Head of State's visit.

Other reports indicate that United Nations UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had sent the former President to try and quell political tensions in Kenya.

Sources within the diplomatic circles stated that Guterres believe Obasanjo draws respect from both the President and the Opposition leader.
