IG Boinnet Issues Alert of Crackdown on NASA Politicians

Inspector-General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, on Friday declared that the clamping of Opposition leaders will continue despite criticism and protests.

Boinnet added that he did not violate the law and constitutional rights of the politicians who have so far been arrested and summoned during the recent crackdown.

Speaking during the Kiganjo Police Training College in Nyeri, Boinnet put the NASA leaders on notice that they will not be spared in the enforcement of the law and order in the country.

"We are serving the people in a constitutional manner. Break the law and face the consequences. We will arrest them,” asserted Boinnet.

However, the IG refuted claims that he disobeyed court orders to release lawyer Miguna Miguna on February 6.

"That I am well aware that the judiciary plays a critical role in our country and I have never disobeyed any court order once brought to my attention," he said.

In his defense, Boinnet alleged that he was away on a National Security Council meeting and therefore he sent a representative to the court.

"I did not disobey the order of this court. At the time I received the information that the DCI and I were required to be present before the court, I was already scheduled to attend a meeting," he highlighted.

Accompanied by his two deputies Noor Gabow - in charge of Administration Police and Edward Mbugua of Kenya Police, the police boss praised the police on how they carried out the arrests they have done so far on the NASA leaders.

"We are matching ahead and no going back. We are serving the people in accordance with the constitution,” noted Mr Boinnet.

The police crackdown on the Opposition leaders started soon after the 'swearing-in' of NASA leader Raila Odinga as the 'People's President.'
