Government Blocked From Arresting Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has obtained court orders restraining the police from arresting her.

The Kitui County boss went to court on Tuesday and granted Sh50,000 anticipatory bail to prevent her arrest over allegations of arousing ethnic animosity.

Ngilu was accused of targetting certain communities in the protests against charcoal burning and sand harvesting business in Kitui.

Transporters from Kiambu county held protests demanding the arrest of Governor Ngilu claiming that she incited the youth to burn lorries transporting charcoal from the county.

The charcoal dealers further stated that trucks owned by the Kikuyu community were being targetted, while those owned by other communities were allowed to ferry the charcoal.

Ngilu, however, denied the allegations maintaining that the ban has been in force since 2014 and the county is only enforcing the Kitui County Charcoal Management Act.

Adding his voice to the subject, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu criticised Ngilu over the burning of the lorry.

“No person should order people’s property to be destroyed. Ngilu should be arrested,” Waititu told charcoal dealers in Kiambu.

They protested outside his office in Kiambu town on Monday maintaining that leaders in Ukambani should not create feuds between the two counties.

Waititu added that he will consult with the Council of Governors in efforts to address the issue of the burned lorry and trucks impounded in Kitui.
