6 Court Rulings That Could Shake Up Raila Odinga's ODM

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is expecting six court rulings in petitions that have been brought against leaders in counties and constituencies that are considered Opposition strongholds.

The High Court will determine petitions brought against ODM leaders in Siaya County, Migori County, Nyamira County, Kisii County, Ugenya constituency and Gem constituency.

Following the nullification of Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti's win, the Raila Odinga-led party is likely to change dynamics of its relationship with independent candidates who vie in its strongholds.

Judge Esther Maina will on Monday deliver the ruling in a petition against Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga as well as one challenging the election of Elisha Odhiambo as Gem Member of Parliament (MP).

Lady Justice Thripsisa Cherere will decide on the petition by former Ugenya MP David Ochieng against incumbent Christopher Karani of ODM.

Justice Cherere overturned Mr Awiti's August 2017 election win, a ruling that has now been challenged at the Court of Appeal.

On Tuesday, Migori Governor Okoth Obado will know his fate after former Minister Ochilo Ayacko challenged his re-election.

February 28, 2018, will see the determination of Walter Nyambati's petition in Nyamira challenging Governor John Nyagarama's victory after the court ordered a vote recount.

Kisii Governor James Ongwae as well as the county's Woman Representative, Janet Ongera will know the fates of their second terms on Tuesday and Monday respectively.

Nyando MP Jared Okello has maintained that the Orange party remains confident despite the impending court rulings.

"The courts will only reaffirm our win where it is upheld. But should our members’ win be nullified, we will re-affirm our strength by winning with even bigger margins in the fresh elections," he stated.
