NASA Demands Shelving of Electoral Boundary Reviews

National Super Alliance (NASA) led by Raila Odinga on Tuesday waged a new war with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) regarding the upcoming viewing of constituency boundaries.

In a joint statement, the NASA Principals including Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula demanded the shelving of electoral boundary reviews until a new electoral body is put in place.

The NASA outfit maintained that they did not have faith in the electoral body as is currently constituted.

“Given the amendments that Jubilee introduced to the election laws agreed on in the run-up to the 2017 polls, and having presided over elections marred by illegalities and irregularities, the IEBC cannot preside over the review of boundaries,” they stated.

They also resolved that they would be no elections in 2022 unless the irregularities and illegalities witnessed in 2017 were addressed.

The Raila Odinga led team pointed out that they would dedicate their efforts to their realisation of electoral justice.

"We urge all our members to singularly focus on electoral justice and vacate all discussions of 2022 elections,” the NASA leaders stated.

This new statement cast doubt on whether the independent body will perform the boundary review in time for the next election.

The agency is expected to review the names and boundaries of constituencies at intervals of not less than eight years and not more than 12 years, the reviews should be completed before a general election.

The NASA leaders also expressed their unease with the amendment bill pushed by Tiaty MP William Kamket to prolong the presidential term, create a Prime Minister post and scrap off the office of the Deputy President.

“The (NASA) coalition will shortly convene a joint Parliamentary Group meeting to cement its position on these matters and particularly on the matter of electoral justice,” part of the statement read.
