NHIF Boss to Be Grilled by MPs over Sh400 Million Scandal

Members of Parliament are scheduled to grill NHIF Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Mwangi over a Sh400 Million tender.

NHIF is accused of having paid two bidders against an order by the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board.

Reports by The Star indicated that the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board was against the tender being awarded to two companies which quoted high prices.

The tender was related to a health cover meant for civil servants, police, and prison officers.

It was inclined towards the provision of the Group Life Cover and last expense for civil servants, National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service for 2017-2018.

The Public Procurement Regulatory Authority temporarily declined to allow NHIF to single source for a multi-million management systems.

Additionally, the Insurance Fund wrote to the PPRA on January 15 asking to be allowed to engage in direct procurement for two tenders.

The first tender is for the development of agency management system portal while the second is for the service maintenance of the customer management system.

However, the PPRA director general John Juma asked NHIF to resubmit the request for failing to attach the required documents.

"We have reviewed the contents of the Direct Procurement report for the above subject tenders and noted that the report was not accompanied by the required supporting documents," PPRA stated.
