#NairobiRains

Social media users used the hashtag to vent their frustrations over flooding in a majority of the city's residential and commercial areas.

Commentators shared photos and video clips of the worst-hit areas while others used the opportunity to blame Governor Mike Sonko for not acting fast enough to improve drainage systems within the city.

In response, Governor Sonko apologised to city residents while accusing the previous regime of embezzling funds that had been allocated to the repairs.

"I am shocked that some Sh10 billion set aside by the previous administration for unblocking the drainage system did not go to the intended use but ended up in the pockets of some unscrupulous characters.

"I am putting them on notice that these monies must be recovered through sweat and toil and put to good use for Nairobi residents," a statement from the Governor read in part.
