Details of Governor Sonko's Partnership with Nairobi Business Community

The Nairobi Business Community met with Governor Mike Sonko and presented a Memorandum of Understanding seeking to partner with him.

In a meeting held on Tuesday with the Kenyan National Chambers of Commerce and Industry Nairobi County chairperson Richard Ngatia affirmed their commitment to work with Sonko and help him realize his vision for the city.

The governor agreed to work with the business community in an effort to encourage, promote and facilitate cooperation among business communities and the County.

The MoU also seeks to establish and expand networking opportunities for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), promote Nairobi County.

Additionally, the MoU also stated the need to create and amend legislation, policies and regulations to improve the business environment and finally establish and sustain a multi-stakeholder permanent dialogue mechanism among other issues.

Ngatia noted that the community needed Policy Reforms, which should be through creation or amendment of pro-business policies for the development of Markets and Infrastructure Bill and Review and Amendment of the Trade Licencing Bill.

Governor Sonko maintained he is ready to work with the business community adding that the proposed policies will be the first thing to be worked on.

Sonko stated: “The expectation is that it will improve all informal markets and also improve the of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Nairobi."

He added: “Hawkers will have a formal way of earning a living without breaking county laws once we have developed the markets and infrastructure where they can sell their wares.”

Finally, the Nairobi Chambers proposed the establishment of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit to work together with Sonko’s Service Delivery Unit for better services.
