NYS Introduces New Buses That Will Charge Ksh50 Flat Rate

Commuters from various Nairobi estates have for a long time decried exorbitant fares especially during the rainy season but the government has now come to their rescue by introducing new buses that will be cheaper.

The National Youth Service (NYS) on Thursday announced that it would deploy 27 buses to help alleviate the commuter crisis in Nairobi occasioned by the ongoing heavy rains.

NYS Director General Richard Ndubai stated that the decision to deploy the buses was made to save commuters from the high fares that are charged by public commuter vehicles during the rainy season.

He further added that the new buses will charge a flat rate of Ksh50 regardless of the distances and the routes used by commuters from high population areas of Nairobi.

Mr Ndubai also mentioned that although more buses will be deployed at a later stage, the routes that will immediately benefit from the NYS buses include Kibera, Githurai, Mwiki, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Dandora, Kariobangi and Kawangware.

“We have witnessed people in Nairobi walking long distances in the rain and most of the time due to high fares charged by commuter vehicles.

"We shall do the much we can to alleviate the suffering,” he reiterated.

Nairobi county was on Thursday last week hit by flash floods after a heavy downfall which was experienced for the better part of the morning.

The rains messed up the city as it caused traffic snarl up at various parts of the Capital.

This situation was even worse for passengers who were forced to queue at bus stations as they waited for vehicles to their destinations.
