Free Medical Check-ups in Murang’a to Honour Kenneth Matiba

The county government of Murang’a on Wednesday announced the extention of a free medical camp in honour of veteran politician Kenneth Matiba who died on April 15.

Residents of Murang’a county were treated to free eye and dental clinic check-ups at the Kenneth Matiba Hospital located in Kenol town.

Governor Mwangi Wa Iria announced the start of the free medical camp soon after the Nyayo era politician died.

Murang'a Health county executive Joseph Mbai confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the medical camp would end on Friday after the week-long extended period.

"We have received an overwhelming turn out at the facility and fro this reason we extended the camp to Friday," he conveyed.

While launching the initiative, Governor Wa Iria promised residents that the hospital would be expanded as planned.

He assured the residents that a piece of public land had been identified and an ultra-modern wing of the hospital would soon be constructed there to ensure high-quality service to both residents of Murang’a and those from neighbouring counties.

The governor further urged politicians to embrace Matiba’s slogan of politics, "let the people decide" and quit the petty attacks that have become the norm.

A memorial service for the politician was held at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi on Wednesday and was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, former President Mwai Kibaki, DP William Ruto, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and various other politicians.

A second funeral service is set for Murang’a county on Thursday, after which the departed democracy advocate will be cremated as per his dying wish.

Matiba was survived by his wife of over 50 years, Edith and their children including a son, Raymond Matiba.
