Simon Mbugua Arrested Over Assault of Ex-NCBDA Chair Timothy Muriuki

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker Simon Mbugua was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the assault of former Nairobi Central Business District Association (NCBDA) Chairman Timothy Muriuki.

Mbugua is a close ally of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko whose aides were accused of attacking Muriuki claiming he was out to malign the Governor's name at a press conference held at the Boulevard Hotel.

A group of heavily built men attacked Muriuki at the hotel as they barred him from speaking to the press.

They dragged him by the collar and tore up his statement just as he was about to read it.

One was heard stating: "Tunakujua. Hatutakuwacha uharibu jina ya Gavana. Haitawezekana (We know you. We won't let you tarnish the Governor's name. That is impossible)."

Muriuki was roughed up by the men who even threatened to throw him in the pool before he was encircled by a group of boda boda riders.

The riders continued attacking him and at one point, he fell into a large puddle of dirty water.

He was forced to flee to the nearby Norfolk Towers for safety.

Muriuki told Kenyans.co.ke that his statement was not targeted at Sonko but, actually, was in his defense.

He filed a statement at the Central Police Station and investigations were launched, with a Ksh500,00 reward eventually offered to the public for any of the 6 goons captured on video assaulting Muriuki.
