Kasarani Stadium Shut Down After Vandalism

Safaricom Stadium Kasarani has been shut down indefinitely after football fans destroyed seats and other properties in and outside the stadium.

According to the Ministry of Sport and Heritage, the Sunday incident had informed the decision to shut down the football arena until further notice.

The decision was arrived at in conjunction with Sports Kenya after Sunday’s friendly match between English Championship side Hull City and Gor Mahia left a trail of damage.

The stadium had been newly-refurbished to host the much-awaited game that ended with a nil-nil score that was later broken in a penalty shootout.

A section of Gor fans left the facility in a bad shape following acts of vandalism after Hull City won 4-3 in the penalties.

Kasarani is set to host Wednesday's Caf Confederation Group ‘D’ match between Gor Mahia and Algerian side USM Alger from 7 pm.

Gor Mahia had been denied access to the refurbished Kasarani Stadium for the mandatory pre-match briefing ahead of Wednesday’s Caf Confederation Cup match against Algeria’s USM Alger.

However, Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa overruled the decision on Tuesday urging the fans to refrain from any act of vandalism before, during and after the match.

"Gor Mahia has been allowed to use Kasarani for their match, however, I humbly ask that you do not ruin the facility we have worked so hard to renovate. I wish you all the best in your match," the CS announced.

Should Kasarani be unavailable for the Wednesday night match, Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos is likely to be an alternative venue.
