Why Nairobi MCAs Have Agreed to Approve Miguna Miguna

Members of the Nairobi County Assembly will vet and possibly approve controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna as their Deputy Governor.

The decision was communicated by the County Speaker Beatrice Elachi during a retreat of the Nairobi Assembly Liaison Committee at Flamingo Hotel.

Elachi who was flanked by the MCAs indicated that Miguna is Mike Sonko's choice and as such, the members we will respect that decision.

"On the day he comes back, we will vet him. We have no choice," the County Speaker indicated.

The County Speaker is expected to table Miguna's name in the Assembly for vetting once the house resumes its sessions in June.

She further reiterated that they are behind Sonko wholeheartedly indicating that: "Governor Sonko has a right. The law allows him to nominate whoever he wants as his deputy."

Elachi had earlier on indicated that the vetting process will begin once Miguna comes back to the country.

The MCAs asked the Head of State to intervene and resolve the tug-of-war between Sonko and certain senior government officials indicating that it is hurting development in the county.

"We are now calling for the truce. We have had enough. Your Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta should now intervene and end the fight," Elachi pleaded.

Elachi indicated that if the fighting between Sonko and the national government was due to a conflict in County functions, then Uhuru should bring a Memorandum of Understanding before the County Assembly for ratification.

"If the war we are witnessing is because of functions, then draft a MoU and we will table it before the Assembly. We can then agree on the way forward," Elachi concluded.
