Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has declared that Deputy President William Ruto is part of the old guard whose time has come to exit the political arena.
Mutua, who is eyeing the Presidency in 2022, stated that Ruto was a part of the infamous Youth for Kanu '92 group (YK92) and they played their part in laying the foundation for multi-party politics.
"Former President Daniel Arap Moi was a LEGCO MP in colonial times, Mwai Kibaki was the Executive Secretary of KAU before it became KANU. All these people, our leaders have laid the foundation.
"Uhuru Kenyatta was the first President under the new constitution, and he has done his job. Raila Odinga has fought for democracy and freedom which we enjoy, many fought with him such as George Anyona, the late Kenneth Matiba and James Orengo.
"Others like DP William Ruto were there with Cyrus Jirongo during YK92 and they laid the foundation in their own different ways," he explained.

Mutua's comments on Ruto, who is also expected to vie for the Presidency, excited the crowd which immediately broke into laughter.
The Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) party leader has been in Kisii on an official visit and made the headlines when a bridge he was standing around collapsed.
At the time, Mutua was accompanied by Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi.
After media reports emerged claiming that Mutua was on the bridge and almost fell into River Gucha, the Governor went after a Standard journalist for allegedly spreading fake news.
"I have written a statement with the CID at Ogembo Police Station so that Standard Journalist Geoffrey Mosoku may be charged with spreading fake news and cyberbullying," he wrote.
