Aldai MP Cornely Serem Files Motion to Disband EACC

Aldai Member of Parliament Cornely Serem has filed a motion at the National Assembly seeking the disbandment of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

In the motion, the legislator stated that the anti-graft body had failed in its principal mandate of investigating corrupt cases and recommending individuals for prosecution.

The move comes days after a section of Nyeri MPs called for its disbandment and the imposition of stricter penalties on the perpetrators of corruption.

The leaders called for the amendment of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act to introduce tougher penalties such as life imprisonment.

Nyeri Senator Ephraim Maina stated: "We should review the laws to see if stricter penalties such as life sentence should be employed in cases of economic crimes that impoverish the country."

He faulted banks for allowing transfer of millions of shillings without raising an alarm.

The Senator advocated for banks to flag suspicious transactions adding that the law should be amended to target large-scale thieves.

“The sentences imposed by the courts should reflect the magnitude of the crime. People are desperate to see corruption come to an end and we have enough evidence to take those who cannot account for their millions to court,” he added.

Echoing the sentiments, Nyeri Town MP Ngunjri Wambugu suggested that matters of corruption should be handled by the police.

"Corruption has become such a major crime... We need to develop penalties that match the problems that corruption is doing to this county.

"In some cases, you hear EACC investigating some cases for years, and we never see anyone taken to court," Ngunjiri stated.

The concerns come as investigations are ongoing on the Ksh9 Billion scam at the National Youth Service (NYS) with suspects already arraigned in court.

As he proceeds with the case, the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has revealed that he fears no one. "I am going for the big fish, small fish and even the whales.'

"I urge any person with information that might assist in the prosecution of the case to volunteer the same to my office. The information shall be treated with utmost confidentiality," he stated on Monday.
