3 Die While Boiling Githeri

Three people died on Wednesday night while preparing a maize and beans meal (Githeri) in Nairobi's Mukuru slums after allegedly inhaling carbon monoxide from a charcoal stove they were using.

The three, a man and two women said to be Uganda nationals, were found dead in their house while the meal was still boiling with the door and all windows closed.

According to Makadara OCPD Nehemiah Langat, they received a call from the neighbours hours after the three had died. The deceased are said to have moved into the area just a few months ago.

“We suspect they died after inhaling carbon monoxide from the jiko. They had no physical injuries at the time the bodies were discovered,” mentioned Langat.

However, Lagat stated that a postmortem procedure would be carried out on the bodies to establish a clear root cause of the deaths.

Mid last year a similar incident happened in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum after two supermarket attendants died from a carbon monoxide emission from a generator.

Also last week two boys suffocated in Kisumu while playing in an abandoned car.
