3 Students Arrested For Trying to Burn Form Four Dormitory

Form four students at Karima Boys High School, Nyeri have a whistle blower to thank for their lives after he raised alarm over students planning to burn a dormitory, hence thwarting the attack.

The three form two students had allegedly planned to burn a dorm occupied by form four students on Saturday night and even went as far as buying three litres of petrol for the job before they were caught.

The three, allegedly sneaked out of school and approached a boda boda rider asking him to transport them to a petrol station and back to the school.

At first the boda boda operator, Michael Komu couldn’t tell that they were students as they had worn their blazers inside out but as soon as they reached the petrol station, the light enabled him to note the identical trousers.

Speaking to The Standard, Komu said that it was at this point that he alerted the school's deputy principal. He further says he tried to detain one of the suspects but he overpowered him and ran off.

The deputy principal Peter Ndung'u says that after the tip off, he called the police and conducted a roll call.

Two of the suspects were able to sneak back into the school compound in time for the roll call but unfortunately for them, the third had been caught by members of the public and handed over to the police.

The three suspects were arraigned in court today, Monday before Othaya Resident Magistrate Raymond Kibet on arson charges.

They were each released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 and a bond of Sh100,000 each, with one surety of the same amount.

If they are not able to pay the money, the three suspects- all aged 16 will be detained at Nyeri Juvenile Prison remand cells.

The case is set for june 25th.

In what is appearing to be a worrying trend, the incident comes barely a week after another group of students from Gikumene Secondary School were arrested for planning to burn a dormitory in their school.
