33 students from Kangubiri Girls High School in Nyeri were seriously injured on Saturday after their bus overturned.
Reports indicate that the students were heading home for their mid-term holidays when the accident occurred at Tambaya along Nyeri-Mukurweini road.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, three girls in critical condition were rushed to Mukurweini Sub-County Hospital.
Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke show residents milling around the overturned bus belonging to Rukagina Sacco that plies the Githurai route in Nairobi.
The government through the Ministry of Education has in the past taken stringent measures to avert the frequent road accidents involving school buses.
For instance, former Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has in the past directed that school buses must operate between 6 am to 6 pm.
The Education Ministry equally enforced the Traffic (Amendment) Act 2016 which requires all school buses to be painted yellow following complaints from parents over the unregulated school transportation sector.
School buses were also required to carry a specific number of children, undergo frequently scheduled inspection and be fitted with appropriate seats and safety belts among other requirements.
On Thursday, 50 students from Starshine Blue School in Kiambu and their teachers narrowly escaped death after a bus they were traveling in was involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Reports indicated that three teachers and one student were seriously injured during the mid-morning accident in Raini trading center, near Naivasha.
