DPP Noordin Haji Reveals Frustrations on Interview With Reuters

In the interview, the DPP stated that his efforts toward the prosecution of corrupt officials was suffering strong opposition from compromised judges.

"If you have judicial officers who have been compromised and they rule against you, the argument will be the case was weak," he lamented.

DPP Haji relayed that the prosecutor had been arrested a month prior and would be processed in connection with allegations of having received a bribe.

"We cannot bury our heads in the sand," the DPP noted adding that his office was currently understaffed and that was still a hindrance to his efforts.

"I only have a handful of lawyers who can prosecute corruption cases," he added.

The DPP further explained that the corruption menace was not only in his line of work at the prosecution's office but also in the security field where he had worked for 19 years before his appointment.

He noted that militants from neighbouring Somalia were crossing the border on passports obtained through bribes.

DPP Haji also commented on the recent arrest of Solai Dam project owner and four others in connection with the death of 47 people following the collapse of one of the dams in the scheme.

The chief prosecutor stated that there were early indicators of a possible collapse "but because of corruption, it was all ignored".
